S.O.S. Review
Well, our Science of Survival camp is over and here are some more videos and photos from the event. It had its ups and downs, but in the end, everyone had a great time. Some of the stuff below includes dirt time, the solar stills, the 3 line “monkey bridge”, etc.

Here is Tim showing kids how to use a striker to start a fire during our science of survival course.
Boiling Water in a Plastic Bottle
Here is a short video I shot on my iphone of my class trying to boil water in a plastic bottle they found along the trail. They are using a vine they found to hold the bottle to a stick over the fire. Due to the leave no trace policy at the camp, we keep our fires small. needless to say..it takes awhile. You can usually get it to boil in about 10-22 minutes. Bes sure to not fill it all the way and to keep the cap off(or at least punch a hole in it). The really thin bottles will shrink a ton. We used a gatoraid bottle that was hard thick plastic. It still deformed, but did not shrink as bad and didn’t melt.
Warning!
This may cause chemicals to leach out of the plastic into your water. This should only be done in a survival situation.
